In today's digital era, giving gadgets to children is often a "shortcut" for parents to keep them quiet. However, did you know that uncontrolled gadget use can have a negative impact on your little one's growth and development? As an elementary school in Palembang (SD di Palembang) that deeply cares about character education and children's mental health, SD Nusa Indah wants to encourage parents to be more vigilant.

The Dangers of Excessive Screen Time According to Experts

Based on recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI), elementary school-aged children should limit their screen time to a maximum of 1 to 2 hours per day, outside of school learning hours. Excessive gadget use has been proven to trigger various serious problems, including:

  • Sleep Disorders and Obesity: Exposure to blue light from screens makes it difficult for children to sleep, and the habit of sitting still while playing with gadgets leads to a lack of physical activity.
  • Decreased Focus: Children's brains become accustomed to fast-paced visual stimuli, making them easily bored and having difficulty concentrating while studying in class.
  • Emotional and Social Problems: Children addicted to gadgets tend to throw tantrums more easily, lack empathy, and have difficulty interacting with their peers in the real world.

Fun Gadget Alternative Activities

To distract children from screens, parents don't need to be confused. Here are alternative activities that are much more beneficial and fun to do at home:

  1. Arts and Crafts: Invite children to draw, color, or make handicrafts. As we routinely implement at school through the Paper Roller Coaster project and Coloring Classes, this activity is very effective in training children's focus, fine motor skills, and patience.
  2. Reading Storybooks Together: Build literacy habits from an early age by reading fairy tales or children's encyclopedias with attractive visuals.
  3. Outdoor Play: Take children cycling, playing ball, or simply running around in the yard. This is very important to channel their excess energy.
  4. Involving Children in Simple Tasks: Cooking together, baking, or tidying up toys can train children's sense of responsibility and independence in a fun way.
  5. Playing Board Games: Classic games like monopoly, snakes and ladders, legos, or chess can hone cognitive and problem-solving skills with the family.

At SD Nusa Indah, we always balance the use of digital facilities for education with real social interaction. Through diverse extracurricular programs and an active learning environment, we are committed to being the best Palembang Elementary School that helps parents raise a healthy, resilient, and smart next generation. Let's work together to limit gadget use and create a childhood rich in real experiences for them!
